FIRST GRADE FOOTNOTES

Dear First Grade Families: 10/9/09

Greetings from Disney World! I hope you are all having a great week in First Grade. I know Mrs. Hummel is enjoying her time with you!
I’m sorry I missed Fire Prevention Week. It’s always fun to see the big fire trucks at Elmer School.

MATH: This week the students were working on complements of 10, labels for number stories, and learning to tell time on an analog clock. Please help them practice telling time – ask them what time is it now? What time will it be in 10 minutes? What time do we eat dinner? What time do you get up in the morning?

LANGUAGE ARTS: This week’s story was “Jack and Rick” and the small, paper decodable books were “The Sack” and “Pack the Van”. Because of the short week next week due to the Columbus holiday, we will have a review week and focus on the theme assessment. This assessment will show us what skills the students have mastered and what we need to review.

SPELLING: First grade has been busy building words and blending words! Since next week is a short week we will have a review of spelling words and work on filling in our classroom Word Wall.

HANDWRITING: Practice! Practice! Practice! Compliment your child’s writing, but correct if necessary. Let’s help get those letters facing the right direction and the right case (lower vs. upper)!

ART: Although we didn’t have any parent volunteers this week, the students got to do a fun “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” packet and learned to draw a skunk!
