FIRST GRADE FOOTNOTES

Dear First Grade Families: 10/30/09

It was great to see so many Very Important Parents this week. I hope you enjoyed your time in school with your child. They were very excited to have you be a part of their school day.

We dubbed this week “ketchup” week in 1st Grade. We spent a lot of time “catching” up on missed work and skills due to the recent absences in our class.

LOST TEETH: Jack lost a tooth last Friday, October 23rd. We used his experience in losing teeth and the others in the class to create a tally chart in Math on the number of lost teeth. What timely data we have available!

MATH: We continued to practice exchanging nickels for pennies and adding various amounts of money. We learned a new game—-High Roller which involved adding the numbers of dots on our dice and went shopping in the Math Journal store. Students are learning to write number models (addition and subtraction) and adding various amounts of money. We completed our 2nd Math assessment and you’ll see the results during next week’s conferences.

LANGUAGE ARTS: We began working on our next story, “All That Corn” this week, but we won’t test on this until next Wednesday. The students are now being asked to read the directions to worksheets on their own and encouraged to complete workbook pages independently and then we review them as a whole group. This is a treat for some and a challenge for others.

READING TESTS: Students will be responsible for reading the next Reading test, “All That Corn” on their own on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Of course, Mrs. Johnson and I will be available to assist with sounding out words.

SPELLING: This week words are: all, call, fall, wall, ball, tall, on, not, so, of. The test will be on Wednesday, November 4, 2009.

ART: Our Art classes with our parent volunteers will resume on November 11th. This week we worked on the sequence of the life of a pumpkin and colored many seasonally appropriate pictures.

CONFERENCES: Confirmation slips went home with the students to remind you of your scheduled conference date and time. If you haven’t received a confirmation and still want to set up a conference time, please get in touch with me as soon as possible.
