FIRST GRADE FOOTNOTES

Dear First Grade Families: 3/19/10

Here’s an overview of what we’ve been doing this week:

NEW JERSEY PROGRAM: Wow, what a show! All of the Elmer students did well, but I am most proud of the First Grade “stars” that really showed everyone how bright they shine on stage! Great job, First Grade!

STAR STUDENTS: Speaking of stars . . . . this week we have had several: Cindy Loufik, Samuel Long, Jimmy Shriver, and Alex Meyers.

LOST TOOTH: Justin Leonetti lost a tooth while sampling some of our NJ Beach salt water taffy. Way to go, Justin!

MATH: This week we practiced and reviewed all the skills we’ve learned so far this year and took our Mid-Year math assessment. I was very pleased with the grades! Look for the graded test in your child’s take-home folder today.

READING: This week we had fun reading Scholastic News, small group books, books of our choice, and practicing our fluency. We will resume our regular reading/spelling schedule next week with a fable called “The Fox and the Stork.”

BOOK BAGS: THERE ARE NO BOOK BAGS COMING HOME THIS WEEKEND! Enjoy the time reading a book of your choosing to and with your child. Book bags will be sent home again next week.

SPELLING: This week we reviewed our words from the last five stories. We had fun practicing these words by playing spelling hangman, spelling line, and the Phonics Wheel game. Next week our words will be long o, /ow/, /oa/ words:

low, bow, row, road, soap, boat, wiggle, middle, talk, school
Bonus (high-frequency) words: door, kind, made, who, would

SUPPLIES: Thank you to all the parents who sent in supplies this week. We appreciate how you take care of all of us!

UPCOMING DATES:
3/20 – Spring Begins!!
5/21 – First Grade Class Trip (more details to follow; chaperones will be needed)

GOOD-BYE: We are sad to see our friends Sophia Riccio and Lea Perez leave us to go to a new school. We will miss their friendship and their beautiful smiles. Best of luck girls and keep in touch!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions/concerns. Feel free to send a note in the homework folder or email me at dmahoney@elmerschool.com.

Enjoy your weekend!
