FIRST GRADE FOOTNOTES
Dear First Grade Families: 5/21/10
Congratulations to all our Talent Show participants! I heard the show was wonderful!
Here’s an overview of what’s been going on in First Grade this week:
MATH: We completed Unit 8 by learning how to equally divide objects into fractional parts – halves, thirds, fourths, etc. and learning how to write fractions such as ½, ¼, etc. Students also continue to practice making various amounts of money using different coins (dollar, quarter, dime, nickel, pennies) and learning the equivalent for each coin or dollar bill, identifying place value (ones, tens, hundreds), and completing fact family triangles.
Unit 9 will focus on more work with place value and fractions. Look for the Home Link 8.10 Family Letter for more details.
I’m happy to report that most students did very well on the Unit 8 Assessment. Only two units left in our First Grade math series!
READING: Because of our class trip this week, the students were given a break and we did not have a test on the fantasy story, “Little Bear’s Friend”.
Next week’s nonfiction story, “Busy, Buzzy Bee” is a favorite amongst insect lovers!
BOOK BAGS: Keep up the good work and continue to read them at least 2 times over the weekend and return them on Monday.
SPELLING: Next week’s spelling words will be /long o/o-e words:
bone, cone, code, rode, rose, those, my, try, again, blue
Bonus/High Frequency Words: another, change, field, touch, twelve, wait, wild
ART: This week we created zoo turtles made of polygons and added sequins for scales. The students had fun creating their turtles and talking about the animals they would see at the Zoo. Thanks to Mrs. Holtz and Ms. Menasse for helping us out at the last minute! We appreciate you!
If you’re interested in helping out with an art project on Wednesdays from 2-3:00, please let me know. We’ve been very fortunate to have so many crafty parents donate their time! Thanks to all our parents!
KITES: Even though the weather wasn’t in our favor on Tuesday for our kite flying, the entire school enjoyed a “kite parade” in the gym and got to see all the different types of kites made by each grade. First Grade had their own private kite flying on Thursday afternoon. All of us agreed it was a fun project to work on. Thanks MK!!
